They say it takes two to tango. Apparently also to setup a gelato business in London. Read on for the story of how husband and wife came up with Gelatology.

ROME, 1992

The Beginning

It all started 25 years ago. I still remember the day I tried my first gelato. The year was 1992 and I was travelling Europe on Eurail, discussing with my travel buddy what to do in Rome once we got there. I suggested Porta Portese and she said “cool, I know a great gelateria close by, we can enjoy a gelato afterwards”. I didn’t know what gelato was but when she explained it was “like ice cream, just better” I was hooked.

The place was called Ping Pong and as we got in, the first thing that struck me were the looks. The creams were exposed in open trays in a cabinet with a glass panel, like pictures in an exhibition. “That looks nice!” I thought. I ordered pistachio and dark chocolate and when my tongue touched the cream I was blown away. “What’s going on here? This is awesome!!!” I cried, and my buddy gave me a wicked grin as if saying “I knew you’d love it...”. In hindsight, how could I not?!

Since then, in every single trip I made to Italy (and believe me, they've been many!) I would chase gelato, hunting for the best creameries in the country, like a devotee on a pilgrimage.

How cOULD you not?

Fast forward 20 years and I meet my wife. Those who know her know that there’s no way not to fall in love with her, but when I found out she also loved motorcycles,  Italy and gelato, there was no turning back: we were hooked and I had found a lifetime companion for my gelato pilgrimages.  Occasionally we would have our disagreements over where the best creams are to be found (she claims Palermo and Naples, while I insist on Milan and Bologna), but otherwise it's been pretty blissful ever since.

So can you guess which country we first visited together and got married later on? And what we indulged on every single day we spent there? Or what was the dessert in our wedding?

LONDON, 2017

Gelatology IS BORN!

Fast forward another 5 years and we are living in London. Out of sheer frustration with how hard it is to get one’s hands on proper gelato here, we decided to do something about it. I went to Italy, studied with the best gelato chefs I could find, built a lab at home and started tinkering with gelato making. Being a self-professed nerd, I spent hours researching and devouring every bit of information about gelato I could get my hands on. And only once I was confident that the creams I was putting out were up to the highest Italian standards, we decided to setup shop.

Gelatology was born! And this, gelato lover, is our gift for you. To enjoy awesome gelato as if in Italy... but close to home.
